David pracował nad nią blisko trzy lata. Tak długi okres wziął się stąd, że Francuz chciał, aby było to jego najambitniejsze dzieło, pokazujące wszechstronność i ogromną erudycję muzyczną. Stąd w zestawie piosenki nieco wolniejsze, bardziej nadające się do przytulania na parkiecie niż do nieskrępowanego, energetycznego dancefloorowego szaleństwa. Didżej znad Sekwany zaczynał pracę nad kompozycjami w sposób bardziej tradycyjny, od próbowania różnych patentów na gitarze albo fortepianie. Dopiero później ubierał je w bogate produkcyjne szaty.
„Mógłbym powtórzyć to, co już dało mi sukces, ale chciałem rozwinąć się jako producent i przekroczyć kolejną granicę” – wyjaśnia David Guetta. „Chciałem spróbować innych rozwiązań, odrzucić to, co wygodne i przewidywalne. Napisać piosenki, które może prezentować zarówno didżej, jak i zespół rockowy albo orkiestra. Używałem fortepianu, gitar, skrzypiec, a potem mieszałem te instrumenty z elektroniką. Jest to również najbardziej osobista płyta pod względem tekstów, stąd dałem taki a nie inny tytuł. Nadaje się nie tylko do słuchania, lecz również do tańczenia. Ot, taka taneczna płyta prosto z serca”.
Piosenek na „Listen” jest 14. Wśród gości pojawiają się w nich między innymi: Emeli Sandé („What I Did For Love”), The Script („Goodbye Friend”), John Legend („Listen”), Nicki Minaj („Hey Mama”), Sia („The Whisperer”), Nico & Vinz wraz z Ladysmith Black Mambazo („Lift me Up”). W dwóch numerach słychać wokalistę, który w ostatnich miesiącach zachwycił Davida najmocniej, czyli Sama Martina. Śpiewa on w „Lovers On The Sun” i „Dangerous”.
